My name is Anita Kangas and I am thrilled to be a 2nd grade teacher at Lake Harriet Community School-Lower Campus.  

Number of years teaching: 19

Subjects/grades taught: 2nd Grade, Kindergarten, Science, Gifted/Talented, Resource and Media/Computer Information.

Have traveled to: Iceland, London, Paris and most of the United States. 

Would like to travel to: Italy, Greece, Ireland and Scotland. 

Most memorable moment in teaching: Watching students express emotion through dance/movement/spoken word during a poetry recital.

Special accomplishment/award: Traveling to Iceland for a month (mostly on my own) to seek out family roots and meet new friends from around the globe.

Inspiration for being a teacher: 6th grade media teacher from Marcy Open School back in the early days of Southeast Alternatives. She had a way of connecting with children that made me feel important and valued.

Where I went to college: University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and Hamline University-St. Paul. 

A world language I speak or have studied is: French.

My favorite subjects in school: Math, Music and Theatre.

My favorite books include: The Grapes of Wrath, Gone with the Wind and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg.

Outside of school I enjoy: Biking, swimming, walking and dinner parties with friends. I love to cook and bake. I also enjoy spending time with my two sons and walking my dogs, Chance and Thunder.
