Volunteer Opportunities & Policies

Each year, hundreds of parents and community volunteers donate their time and talents to Lake Harriet Community School. Parent involvement is a critical component that drives LHCS excellence. We encourage and need all families to get involved in their child's education through volunteering.

If you are a parent, guardian, grandparent, or community member and would like to volunteer at Lake Harriet, please fill out the volunteer interest form. We'll communicate with you about ways to be involved in the school. 

BEFORE VOLUNTEERING:

• Complete the Basic Volunteer Form. The Volunteer Form is kept on file for six years - from kindergarten through fifth grade - so if you have previously filled it out, you do not need to fill it out again unless you have moved or changed names.
• Review the MPS online orientation and agree to MPS Volunteer Expectations. The submission of your online Basic Volunteer Form serves as your agreement to the expectations.
• Background checks are required if you will be alone with any students - such as chaperoning field trips, tutoring, or any other role that is unsupervised by a teacher. For those circumstances, please complete the Volunteer Background Check Request Form. After submitting the form, you will receive an email with the subject line "Action Request" which contains a link to complete your background check. It can take 3-5 business days for you to receive this email. Your background check must be completed within 48 hours of receiving the email or you may need to start the process over. You will be notified of your results via email. The school will also be notified of your results. Please allow up to 2 weeks for the background check process to be complete. Background checks are good for 2 years.
