From the Principal’s Desk:

Welcome to Lake Harriet Community School.  We are one school split into two campuses.  Angie Ness is the Principal of the Lower Campus, located at 4030 Chowen Ave S, and Walter Schleisman is the Principal of the Upper Campus, located at 4912 Vincent Ave S.  The school shares an Assistant Principal between the two campuses.  Her name is Ashley Gillingham.

We are all very excited and honored to be administrators at Lake Harriet and are working hard to make our school the best it can be.  This year, we will be starting with online learning.  More details to follow as soon as we receive them.  We will continue to work with our teachers to expand our ability to tailor instruction to each student's individual needs.  This is a challenging task, but through our Professional Learning Communities (small groups of teachers who work together to improve) our teachers are trying many new strategies.

We are also constantly working to improve our school climate and to teach our students to be great people as well as strong students.  Both campuses have Engagement Teams, which are teams of teachers and administrators who work to offer more opportunities for student leadership, offer opportunities for student growth (such as "mix it up" lunch days and quarterly assemblies), and who monitor our efforts to make sure we are doing all that we can.  Every year we are adding or adjusting to our programs.  For instance, Upper Campus is working on a Social Emotional Learning goal based on the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) framework our school district has adopted.  This year we will be focused on Social Awareness.  Recently, Lower Campus added student leaders and "Citizens of the Month."

Another area in which we are always seeking to improve is parent connection to the school.  Over the past few years we have added more parent engagement evenings around academics and social emotional learning.  Through our active PTA and Site Councils we have added Family potlucks, our 100 year celebration, and numerous Parties Galore activities.  We have also moved more music, art and drama performances to the evenings to help make it easier for parents to attend.

If there is one constant to our roles it is seeking continuous improvement.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or ideas to share. Thank you.
