GEMS - Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science
GISE - Guys in Science and Engineering
An extracurricular program for grades 3 through 5
The GISE and GEMS program mission is to offer a high-quality, challenging enrichment program to students who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
Introduction to GISE and GEMS
GISE and GEMS teach STEM concepts using team-based, hands-on projects involving robot programming and design and other engineering challenges. Registration for GISE and GEMS is usually open in early September for interested 3rd-5th grade students at Lake Harriet. Teams form after the application deadline has closed and practices usually start in October. Team membership is based on grade, gender, and student interest. Please see the Introduction section at the right for general information on the program. Applications are available from the GISE/GEMS LHCS teacher and/or parent volunteer coordinator.
The first semester of GISE and GEMS is devoted to a program called First Lego League (FLL). This exciting program includes both a Robotics Challenge and a Research Project. Because time with a coach is limited (and the robot is usually with the coach), much of the Research Project and accompanying presentation must be completed by the students at home (homework!) or through parent volunteer-led additional meetings. Please see the Homework Requirements section at the right for more information.
It's all about building a better future! Check out the First Lego League website for this year's theme and challenge, City Shaper.
