Positive Chalk Messages
Response to Graffiti
Friday, August 2, 2019 3:20 PM

Today, students, staff, parents and community members gathered at 49th and Vincent to respond to the hateful graffiti painted on our door.  Over the course of two hours multiple images with positive and welcoming messages were created on our sidewalks.  Thank you to everyone who showed up to support our school and community.  There is another event scheduled by community members on Sunday, August 4, starting at 2:00 pm.

Anti-Semitic graffiti at Lake Harriet Upper
Thursday, August 1, 2019 3:20 PM

Dear Lake Harriet community,

You may hear reports in the news or on social media of anti-Semitic graffiti on the doors of the Lake Harriet Upper campus. Superintendent Graff made the following statement, which I agree with completely. Acts like this have no place in our society, especially in our schools.

“In the strongest terms, Minneapolis Public Schools condemns the anti-Semitic attack on our schools and community. We are working closely with the Minneapolis Police Department to find out who did this. Our schools should be safe, respectful and welcoming places for all of our students, families and community members. And we stand united against hatred in all its forms.”

I encourage you not to share the image or give it additional attention on social media. That is exactly what people hope for when they do things like this, and we should avoid giving them any attention—because they deserve none. Instead, Friday morning (8/2/19) from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. we will have chalk available at the corner of 49th and Vincent for anyone who wants to write positive, welcoming messages on our sidewalk.

Thank you for your support of our school and our Jewish community. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next month.
