Service Learning at Lake Harriet Community School

The Diversity Committee will work together with LHCS Principals, Kathy Roberts and the student council to provide service learning opportunities for all students at Lake Harriet. You may recall last spring that the K-2nd graders raised money for food for Haiti and helped to stock a local food shelf in Minneapolis. The 3rd-8th graders also raised money for food for Haiti and helped pack it with Impactlives, a local nonprofit involved in humanitarian efforts. These activities were led by the student council and Kathy Roberts.

What is service learning? According to the Mpls Public Schools Dept. of Community Education, “Service-Learning is based on the belief that students are an asset to their communities, and have something valuable and essential to offer those around them. Engaging in Service-Learning Projects in school allows students to see needs in their communities and to, as a group, engage in efforts to meet those needs through service projects that are student-initiated and student-led.”

This year, the overall theme of service learning will be housing. There will be a local component, focused on homelessness and the highly mobile, and a global component, focused on housing for Haiti families. We are excited to partner with other Mpls Public Schools who are doing service learning and to work with an international organization called American Refugee Committee that is helping to build shelter in Haiti. Together, we will look to our students to do amazing service work and learn about our local and global communities.
