Your student is going to be challenged this year during our reading time!  At the beginning of the year, I will issue the challenge to each student read at least 40 books at their level.  Students are encouraged to bring books from home, visit the neighborhood library, and always have a book with them incase they have an opportunity to read.  Not only will your student be reading books of their choice, they will be applying larger literary concepts to the books they are reading, requiring them to do some intense critical thinking and applying their learning on a much deeper level.  In order to meet grade-level expectations, as well as our reading goal, students are strongly encouraged to read independently a minimum of 30 minutes.

The 40 book challenge was developed by Donalyn Miller and explained in her book, "The Book Whisperer".  Click here to read more about it.
