Here is a great opportunity for you to be part of a great tradition at Lake Harriet Community School! The MPS has a yearly District-wide math competition for fifth grade students. This year it will be on Saturday, April 28, 2012. All schools are invited to participate and in the past years Lake Harriet students have always done a wonderful job of demonstrating their math skills.

We need a few parent volunteers who would be willing to coordinate a before or after-school group of interested fifth grade students to prepare for the competition. Lake Harriet will provide the classroom, materials and support for you. If you are hesitant because you might think your math skills are rusty, a parent volunteer who is working with the Middle Grades “Math Counts” group said that he can certainly help out.

Your responsibility would be to coordinate everything and be at the sessions each time. The practice materials, calculators, and stopwatch will be made available to you. I will also be available to assist you by giving insight of how to set up and practice in order to prepare for the competition. I will also be at the competition in April. If you would like a copy of the practice test and answers, e-mail me and I will send it to you.

We would like to start this group at the end of January or beginning of February, so if you would be interested in possibility being a part of this, please contact me at Kim.Kirk@mpls.k12.mn.us. Thank you. Kim Kirk Talent Development & Gifted Services Lake Harriet Community School
