Dear Families,

May is upon us with beauty and gusto! At Lake Harriet, that means much more than the weather—it means band, orchestra and vocal concerts; grade-level residencies with the Science Museum (3rd) and a dulcimer maker (5th); field trips; kindergarten orientation; and project presentations (4th).

May is also when students take various formal tests, the most interesting of which is the MAP reading and math test for students in grades 2 – 8. The district requires all schools to conduct fall and winter MAP testing. At LHCS, we decided to use the MAP this spring as well. The test is standards-based and, by administering it this spring, we can specifically review each student’s academic growth over the past school year. We believe that’s important information. Classes will test in the computer labs May 11 – 28.

Lastly, please have your kids wear bike helmets. The great weather has brought out more bikes, and we’ve had some close calls—but thank goodness no injuries. Remember our rule: Students who ride their bike to school must wear a helmet. Let’s help keep our kids safe out there.

Stay in touch, and thanks for your support.
