Leah Swanson

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!

This year I will be at Lake Harriet Lower Campus (LHLC) and Pratt Community School. My responsibilities include working as a Resource Teacher and DCD Prep provider daily at LHLC as well as Resource Teacher at Pratt for a half day a week. At LHLC I case manage and provide instruction to K-3rd grade students who have Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.’s) and receive Resource level Special Education support. I also provide daily instruction to students in our WINGS/DCD program for 55 minutes per day. Students with I.E.P.’s in the Resource program receive services that include instruction in the areas of reading, writing, math, work completion, organization, self-advocacy, social skills, and/or self-regulation. At Pratt, I work with the Special Education Resosurce staff to help meet the needs of Kindergarten through 5th grade students on IEP's.

This is my fifth year at Lake Harriet and I have been working for MPS for 21 years as either a Resource Teacher or a Special Programs Teacher. I received my undergraduate degree at the University of North Dakota where I earned my Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Communication Disorders. I also attended St. Cloud State University and earned my Master’s of Science Degree in Special Education with K-12 licensure in the areas of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Mild to Moderate Mental Handicapped (MMMH).

Of all of my teaching assignments, working with the children and families at Lake Harriet Lower has been the most rewarding and enjoyable of my career. I love working with primary age children and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of their early years as students. I strive to make learning fun and to help children develop a love of school. I look forward to working with your child  and family to make this a great year!
