LHCS Debate Team information

I am coaching the LHCS Debate Team again this upcoming 2017-18 school year.  All motivated 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to participate.  The Debate Team is a commitment though.  I only want students on the Debate Team who enjoy this extra-curricular activity and are willing to put in the work to be well-prepared for tournaments.  The Debate season will begin in early-November and continues through March.

Debate is great experience for students for creating reasoned arguments from both the “pro”/affirmative point-of-view and the “con”/negative point-of-view of an issue.  Debate tournaments are friendly and supportive.  Students debate in pairs against other pairs from other schools.  These debates happen in classrooms with just a few parents and coaches watching.  There is no debating in front of a large group of people.  Schools from all over Minneapolis and Saint Paul participate in this Minnesota Urban Debate League.  Some other schools participating include Anthony, Barton, Murray, Sanford, and Highland Park.

There is no cost to join Debate and there will be no tryouts.  Every committed, motivated middle-school student is welcome to join and compete.  Students are expected to attend weekly practices.  Debate practice will take place Monday from 8:30-9:20am this upcming school year.  Debate tournaments begin in January and continue to March; there will be 4-5 tournaments this school year.  Locations and dates for these tournaments are TBD.  Busses will be provided to and from the tournaments.  Tournaments usually start around 3:00pm and go until 7:30pm (students will miss part of  5th and 6th hour on these 5 tournament days).
