Hello and welcome! My name is Anita Kangas and I'm excited to be teaching Second Grade this year at Lake Harriet Community School.

Number of years teaching: 19

Subjects/grades taught: 2nd Grade, Kindergarten, Science, Gifted/Talented, Resource and Media/Computer Information.

Have traveled to: Iceland, London, Paris and many states of the US.

Would like to travel to: Scotland, Italy and Poland.

Most memorable moment in teaching: Watching students express emotion through dance/movement/spoken word during a poetry recital.

Special accomplishment/award: Traveling to Iceland for a month (mostly on my own) to seek out family roots and meet new friends from around the globe.

Inspiration for being a teacher: 6th grade media teacher from Marcy Open School back in the early days of Southwest Alternatives. She had a way of connecting with children that made me feel important and valued.

Where I went to college: University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and Hamline University-St. Paul.

A world language I speak or have studied is: French.

My favorite subjects in school: Math, Music and Theatre.

My favorite books include: Grapes of Wrath and any children’s books by David Shannon.

Outside of school I enjoy: Biking, swimming, walking and dinner parties with friends. I love to cook and bake. I also enjoy spending time with my two sons and walking my dogs, Chance and Thunder.
