Principal Hiring Update
Monday, January 28, 2008 10:25 PM

The first step in the district’s plan to replace LHCS Principal Marsha Seltz, who is retiring in February, was to post the position internally in January. The posting was not open to either assistant principals or external candidates because both of those groups would have low seniority and could be bumped if the district needs to downsize in the future. No current principals applied during this first round of posting. Whether to re-post the position either internally or externally will depend on the number of retirements that occur this spring. Once the district knows all the schools that will have principal openings, it will make final decisions on school assignments. District leadership continues to use the results of our parent survey on principal qualities to guide their decisions

In the meantime, the district has hired Hank Taxis, a retired MPS principal, to serve as interim LHCS principal for the rest of the year. Mr. Taxis was principal at Webster K-8 School for several years and also worked on the MPS middle grades platform. For the past four years, he has worked in different schools building student support systems and enhancing professional adult cultures.

Mr. Taxis and Principal Seltz have begun to plan together for a smooth transition leading up to Marsha’s last day on Feb. 15. Marsha will continue to be involved in upcoming budget, staffing or other concerns as needed. Jay Alexander and Anne Wade will also be a tremendous help over the next few months. We welcome Mr. Taxis to LHCS!
