LHCS Winter Holiday Giving Opportunities
Monday, December 03, 2007 8:55 PM

LHCS families are invited to contribute to a holiday gift program for the women and children served by Tubman Family Alliance. The goal is to "allow clients to experience holiday gift giving while preserving their dignity and self worth." Gift baskets of donated items will be assembled for the children (using moms’ suggestions) and will include surprises for the mothers, too. The baskets will be distributed at a party on December 18 at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church. This is part of our middle school student council’s on-going service-learning relationship with Tubman Family Alliance. Please consider supporting this effort as you plan your holiday giving.

There are several ways that LHCS families can help:

Donate gift cards (Target, Kmart, Cub Foods, etc. Make sure cards retain their value and do not have restrictions. Stores on bus lines are preferred.) Bring cards to the box in the office at either campus. You may also deliver your contribution directly to Lake Harriet United Methodist between 9-4 weekdays, Dec. 7-Dec. 14.

Provide cookies or desserts for the party. Bring items to Lake Harriet United Methodist between 9-4 on Dec. 17 or Dec. 18 at 4901 Chowen Ave. S.

Volunteer to help gift wrap, organize donations, shop, prepare baskets, etc. Work times are available Dec. 7-17. Contact Jill at jilloertel@yahoo.com to schedule.

In addition, after school each day between December 10-14, a small group of middle school students will walk to a nearby church to help with a holiday gift program for Tubman Family Alliance. One adult is needed to accompany these students from 3:30-4:30. The adult would need to meet students in the commons, walk to church site, help and dismiss the group at 4:30. A sign-up sheet for middle school student volunteers and parent chaperones is in Room 6, or call Lyn Mitchell 612-669-1232.

For the second year, the middle school student council is partnering with Tubman Family Alliance for school-wide service learning work. The students chose to work with Tubman because of the comprehensive work that agency does around housing, education, children, mental health, and family violence prevention. Please support their work! Questions? Call Lyn Mitchell at 612 -824-6229.
