8th Grade Learning Targets

We will study 3 major units in 8th grade this year:

1. Weather and Climate

2. Changing Earth

3. The Earth and Space

Students will be assessed on these long-term targets each semester:

Semester 1 Learning Targets

1.     I can select and appropriately use lab equipment and mathematical tools to study meteorology.

2.     I can describe the structure and composition of Earth’s atmosphere.

3.     I can explain why weather changes.

4.     I can construct a model of the water cycle to show how water moves on planet Earth.

5.     I can specify the factors that affect a region’s climate and explain how they influence weather conditions over time.

6.     I can describe the structure of Earth’s interior.

7.     I can analyze surface features of the Earth to infer processes that shape them.

8.     I can write a scientific explanation/conclusion that includes a claim, evidence, and reasoning.

9.     I can design and conduct a controlled experiment.

10. I can analyze data.

Semester 2 Learning Targets

1.     I can examine a rock and tell its story.

2.     I can compare and contrast renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.

3.     I can describe how the motions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun create a variety of observable cycles.

4.     I can explain how gravity acts on objects.

5.     I can describe Earth’s place in space.

6.     I can compare and contrast the objects in our solar system.

7.     I can give examples of how technology can impact science and the quality of human life.

8.     I can write a scientific explanation/conclusion that includes a claim, evidence, and reasoning.

9.     I can design and conduct a controlled experiment.
