6th Grade: Read, Write, Create

Quarter Two: Novel Writing Unit

This unit is "loosely" based on a unit put together by The Young Writer's Project. You can see a very basic overview by viewing this site: https://ywp.nanowrimo.org/pages/for-families.

Basic Guidelines:

  • Students will set a challenging goal for themselves for how many pages their novels will be. The minimum is FIVE pages, most students will do 10-15 pages and some will do 20, 50 even a whole novel!
  • Students will use Google Docs to write. They will be expected to SHARE their story with a writing partner, with me, and with parents and support staff (ie special ed teacher/sea).
  • We will work closely on particular elements of fiction and work through the process carefully and thouroughly - Character Development, Conflict, Plot, Setting, Word Choice (description, transitions) Organization, sentence fluency etc.
  • We will spend the entire quarter on this process. Students are encouraged to focus on writing QUICKLY and not getting too hung up on minor details or conventions (ie. grammar, punctuation) as we write. They will use the autocorrect on Google Docs as they go and we will ensure that they are using paragraphs properly, but we don't want to get bogged down by the details.

Parents: I can use ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD working on this unit. If you ever want to pop in and give some support MON-WED you are more than welcome!
