This fall, Lake Harriet eighth graders were invited to enter the 2008 Martin Luther King Essay Contest sponsored by the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights. The question posed to students this year was, "Why do you think discrimination still exists today?" In November students worked on their essays in Ms. Krawetz’s Social Studies class and submitted their original essays to the contest.

This past week we received the good news that two of our students were winners in the eighth grade division: Chris Lee-Foss won second place, and Emma Michl received the third place award. Chris and Emma, along with the other winners, will be honored by the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Rybak at a special ceremony this Friday, Jan. 18, at City Hall. We congratulate our students for their fine work.
